Information related to RAW partition

Information related to RAW partition

Hi,

Can anyone let me know whether RedHat Linux supports raw partitions so that I can install Sybase on it.

My system is Intel Based.

The Version of RedHat I am using is 9

If you have redhat installed you can type fdisk and choose list partition types it will show you all the partition types it supports, you may also have to compile in support for it in the kernel if its not already installed.

Thanks.

The output of Fdisk shows all the know partition types.

But I would like to know that whether it supports RAW partition just like SUN Solaris.

So that I can create a RAW device on my RedHat system and install Sybase on it. Since sybase supports Raw Partition it will be automatically using it.

You can create raw partitions.

1. Run fdisk to create the partion
2. Bind the partition to a raw device (eg raw /dev/hda5 /dev/raw/raw1)
3. Edit the /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices file and place an entry for each of the partitions
4. reboot ( just cause)
5. run raw -qa to show the bound devices

For sybase, you will need to chmod 770 and chown sybase:sybase on the the /dev/hd* and /dev/raw/raw* ( the * is the devices that you created and bound) . You will also need to chmod 770 the /dev/rawctl file.

Hope this helps
