index.html is not noticed in /var/www/html

Red Hat Enterprise 3 AS (webserver)

I have the package installed for apache.
I have access to apache, but it doesn't recognize my index.html file. I placed it in the directory /var/www/html. This is the Directory root listed in httpd.conf. I tried using a .htm file also, but it doesn't work. can anyone stear me in the correct direction.

thanks.

Look through httpd.conf for DirectoryIndex and configure it like this:

DirectoryIndex index.html

Also, you should always be able to ask for the file directly (e.g., http://127.0.0.1/index.html) If that doesn't work, then something else is wrong.
