Increase EXT3 Filesystem size in a LVM?
I have really sad that RedHat have not yet developed an utility to increase the size of an ext3 filesystem that is created in a LVM (Logical Volume).

I am a Sysadmin (AIX), moving to Some system to Linux.

On SuSE you can enlarge a filesystem (Reiserfs, XFS)while it is MOUNTED.

In a production this is really important.

Having to shut database down to increase the size of a Filesystem is a BIG OUTAGE.

When RedHat is going to understand that WE NEED to ENLARGE EXT3 FILESYSTEM WHILE THEY ARE MOUNTED (In a Volume Group - LVM) ?

Anybody know a way to enlarge a filesystem ext3 without having to unmounted when they space in the volume group (in a LVM env) ?
Like we can do with all others JFS, REISERSFS and XFS.

I think LVM2 (in Fedora and, soon, RHEL 4) will let you do this using lvextend and ext2online.....ext2online is currently in Fedora Core and so is LVM2., yes, Red Hat understands and is working on a solution for this problem.

You are right my friend - At last !
I just install Fedora Core 3 and I tested it and it works !

In Fedora Core 3, we can now increase a filesystem on line WITHOUT umounting it.

Hopefully Red Hat will include it in Red Hat Enterprise 4.0

# mount -t ext3 /dev/rootvg/test /test

# df -k /test
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
63461 5403 54782 9% /test

# lvextend -L+64M /dev/rootvg/test
Extending logical volume test to 128.00 MB
Logical volume test successfully resized

# ext2online /dev/rootvg/test
ext2online v1.1.18 - 2001/03/18 for EXT2FS 0.5b

# df -k /test
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
126931 5658 114725 5% /test

Thank You !
