Can anyone help me on how i can remove the curent installation?
I run red hat 9 in a partition with the other one running win 98

So you want to give the entire hard drive back to win98 ?

Several ways of doing it.

Does your computer have a cd burner? If not, does it have a floppy drive?

it have both

Excellent, that will make this easy.

Head on over to http://knoppix.com/

Download the knoppix 3.7 iso in your own language, which, if that is english, will be KNOPPIX_V3.7-2004-12-08-EN.iso

Burn the iso to a cd.

Boot from the cd.

Once knoppix has fully booted, open up a console and type "su" (without the quotes). If I remember right, this should pop you directly into root. If it asks for a password, type in "root" (without the quotes, you get the idea).

Once you are root, type in "qtparted". This will open up a nice program where you can change your partitions.

The win98 partition type will be FAT32. If you have more than one FAT32 partition, then stop right there and let me know.

If you are wanting to return the hard drive back to the standard windows set-up then simply delete all the other partitions, and resize the FAT32 partition to fill up the drive. Qtparted will give you a warning to back up your data before committing the changes. The back-up is a good idea, but I have never lost any data using qtparted and have not heard of anyone who has. I often don't back-up.

Once that is done, reboot, pull out the cd, and boot into windows.

Oh, also, if you have the rh9 boot loader it will still have all the old entries in it. You may want to switch it out for something else. I like the GAG boot manager for general things like that. You'll find it at: http://gag.sourceforge.net/index.html

Unfortunly i didn't see your last post and i delete all partitions now i have a biggg problem...

the only thing i see is "grab>", i can't get on windows!

Do you have somthing to suggest?

If you have a windows boot disk then boot from it and at the DOS prompt type 'fdisk /mbr', which should return you to a prompt at which point remove the disk and reboot.

If you don't have a boot disk then create one from within another windows installation. Otherwise you could download one, for example from http://freepctech.com/pc/002/files010.shtml (I just googled for this, I don't know of its integrity)

Perhaps a web search for 'fdisk mbr grub' will offer some more answers.

Sorry about that. I am used to the lilo boot loader, and grub's multi-stage design makes it a little different. I did the same thing as you to myself not too long ago. If I'd remembered I would have warned you.

I'm glad you later tried GAG. As you noticed, the GAG install floppy itself is a "boot-disk" of-a-sort.
