I did some looking around on linuxprinting.org just now, which has been a great help for me. Unfortunately I dont see your model listed in their database of supported printers.
They generally have a great database.
Concerning CUPS I wouldn't recommend it. I haven't had any luck with using CUPS and don't know many people who have. I would suggest using another print Queue management program.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

try generic
what if you try something generic - something pretty closely mathching without some fancy features. Worked for me. Or try raw or postscript generics.
As for CUPS, I strongly recommed it for printing more than just text. The only hitch so far being, that Konqueror doesn't read margin information and I end up with, well, funny pages. I solve the problem by printing html dox with Mozilla.
Don't give up, though... I had to try at least 20 different sets of printer config settings... it pays to be perseverant...

I didn't use CUPS. I am at work, so I don't have details here. But in the printer setup at the bottom of the desktop in Gnome, there is an option for SMB. I had to tell it my network name and the IP address of the XP Pro machine. Perhaps another item. Oh yeah, the printer name that is used in your XP Pro machine. Then in the edit I choose my printer from a list. For me that 's an HP895CXI.
Getting the network name, IP address of the XP Pro machine and printer name was the key hurdle that I had been fighting with all my Linux desktop attempts.
I will try to remember to check this when I get home and see if there is some more info I should add.

Ok, It sounds like you might have it setup correctly, it may just be a matter of the right driver. Some say to try other drivers and that may be the solution.
Here is my setup.
I open the Printer setup, I right-click the printer and select properties. Enter your root password. Click the printer and then select Edit from the menu. In the menu, select Queue Name Tab make sure the name of your printer is the same as in your XP machine. Mine is printer.
Next go to the Queue Type tab, choose Networked Windows SMB, enter your share name. Mine is //gregmain/printer The gregmain is the name I am using as an example here for the name of my XP Pro machine.
Under User, I entered guest
Server Hostname or IP address I entered the IP of my gregmain machine on my home network.
Password, I entered the admin password of my gregmain or XP Pro machine (same machine, don't get confused if I call it different names. It is the server with the printer attached on my home network. It shares the DSL also.)
Workgroup, I entered the name of my home network. Lets call it MSHOME
Next go to the Printer Driver tab and select a printer driver to try. I only see a X73 listed under Lexmark in my Redhat 9.0. I do not know if it will work. Try others if not.
If you already have most of this info about hostnames and IP's and passwords done, then my only other suggestion is to delete the current printer and enter a new one. I had that problem when trying to configure the printer. But once I got it right, I had to make it the default or delete the first attempt at setting it up. As that first one was the default and when I closed the printer setup utility it kept selecting it and not printing.
And another thing. Even when it was setup wrong it would say sending to the printer, but nothing would print. It would not always indicate that it was setup wrong.
Sorry it's so long. Hope it helps.

Hi! I have heard that lexmark and HP shares, sometimes, the same drivers for unix systems, so, you should try it with some "generic" or similar HP machines' drives.
By the other hand, have you ever tried if your linux system can print alone? I mean, locally connected to your linux box?
And, why not print from winz to linx?
Yes! cups is not a friendly program for me, and I spent a lot of time configuring my poor photosmart 1115 for all my applications...believe me, it was very easy to configure my printer with previous distros...
