Question How to start Nessus Client

Dear All,

I have installed both server and client of Nessus 3.0.6 on my PC with RHEL 4.0. The server is starting and all pluggins are getting loaded. My client is in /opt/nessus/bin directory. wen i gave a command /opt/nessus/bin/NessusClient, it says cannot connect to x server. What could be the problem?

Maybe a dumb question but did you run nessus-adduser?

As far as I remember, to use nessus graphic interface you need to configure users using nessus-adduser that are going to be used by that interface to connect to nessusd.

Althoug the can't connect to X seems more like a X restriction to the user your using to trying to run the nessus interface in which case you could try issuing as root:
Code:
xhost +
But there are other alternatives more secure than that I think

Code:
kaziem:~# NessusClient
NessusClient: cannot connect to X server
kaziem:~# xhost +
xhost: unable to open display ""
kaziem:~#
Thanks for the quick answer,

I can start it fine with a normal user now. It's weird that I can't do it with root though. Also when I installed nessus, it comes with a bunch of /opt/nessus/etc /opt/nessus/bin /opt/nessus/lib, should I leave it like that or is there a better way to arrange those files? I'm using Debian Lenny/Sid.

Thanks in advance

The directories are correct, at least normal for nessus and other software.

About being able to launch nessus as root you could try running "as normal user" (not root):

Code:
xhost +root
or

Code:
xhost +localhost
or

Code:
xhost +local.root

Thanks Acron_0248, I got it to work as root with a different approach, installing "sux" (http://fgouget.free.fr/sux/sux-readme.shtml).

From Debian repository description:

sux - wrapper around su which will transfer your X credentials

If you use debian you only need to:

Code:
apt-get install sux
And use it when you want to use su but also be able to run GUI programs.

... check you have done everything
... is the server running? (How did you check?)
... is the port open (how did you check)?
