how to setup internet connection in rhel ws
hi
am a new linux user. i have redhat enterprise linux WS and Win Xp on a dual boot machine. i have been provided my IP, GATEWAY, SUBNET, DNS(which is same as Gateway). i am using cable net from my winxp without problem. but am not able to connect from linux. i have been thru earlier posts, and tried installing NTLM authentication. it asks me for password.. i mentioned the password.. then nothing happens.. and when i try to to search a web page, it gives me following error. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- uthorization Proxy Server v0.9.7 at "fabnet.com:5865". 2001 (C) by Dmitry Rozmanov Traceback (most recent call last): File "./main.py", line 97, in ? serv.run() File "lib/server.py", line 52, in run self.client_run(conn, addr) File "lib/server.py", line 62, in client_run thread.start_new_thread(c.run, ()) thread.error: can't start new thread ------------------------------------------------------------------------ can anyone help me out solving this problem please?? |
looks like your proxy server is broked. And seeing as you didn't even mention a proxy server in any of your preamble.... i think we need some more consistent information.

i guess.. there r all NOOBs over here.. not a single expereinced person.. i think i shud cancel my a/c. its of no use... getting bored over here. |
I think your attitude has pretty much turned anyone off from helping you...however, let me ask the following questions:
1) How are you obtaining an iP address? Are you plugging one in statically or are you getting through DHCP? How do you do it for your windows installation? 2) Do you go through a router to access the internet? 3) Is your ethernet adapter even activated? You can tell by running the ifconfig command. If all you have listed is lo, then your ethernet card is not turned on. Activate the adapter by running ifup eth0. If you are not satisfied with the help you are getting here, then please contact Red Hat for assistance. If you are running Enterprise WS, then you've obviously paid for a support subscription, right? |
thanks 4 ur reply.
answers 4 ur Qs 1. am assiging my ip statically in both Windows and REdhat. 2. abt the router thing i dont know whether my ISP is using ne router or not. 3. my eth0 is activated. i tried it in shell as well as in GNOME using neat. thanks again 4 ur last advise. actually i got RHEL from a Redhat certified inst where am doing my RHCT. i'll try there. thanks |
If your ethernet interface is active, then double check your DNS settings...see if you can ping anything by IP address instead of hostname.
For cable internet access these days I don't think you really need any special authentication anymore (but that's at my location...not sure about yours). You should be able to connect without having to use anything fancy. |
Ping for the server is disabled. i cannot even ping from my XP machine. wht dns setting shud i check ? i have just a dns ip which same as my gateway. wht else can u suggest ?

you are clearly being directed through some sort of proxy server, how else do you propose you are getting a proxy auth error???? Outwardly this does not look like a problem, but a problem on your proxy.
quite how you expect to get help when you deny base facts i don't know... and then there's that apparent attitude problem. |
