How to install a specific package?

Hello forum,

This question might seem really stupid but I've been trying to find how Redhat lets me search for a substring of a package name, then list me the packages it found, lets me check the packages I need and prompt me for the right CD to install.

- The package manager available on Redhat lets me check some packages and prompts for the CD(s) BUT doesn't let me search for packages. So if I am looking for a given library for example, I have to go through the many categories until eventually I find it. Sometimes I don't even find it because it is hidden in some arcane place...

- on the shell, I can rpm -iv any package, but to do this, I first need to go through all the CDs and see on what CD the package is available.

I almost can't believe Redhat doesn't provide a tool which is available on every distro I've met so far (synaptic on Debian, Mandrake package manager on now Mandriva or yast on Suse)...

Note: using RHEL4 64 bit.

Note: this is in response to ricky_ds's question; sbarwal, please start a new topic

Fedora Core comes with "yum" which is a very good updater. I'm not sure if RHEL has yum. If not, try to install it (I'm not sure from where). After you install it, here are some instructions:
* http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/updates/using-yum.html
* http://www.fedorafaq.org/#installsoftware
Basic commands are:
Install package foo:
Code:
yum install foo
Update all packages:
Code:
yum update
Search for string foo in packages:
Code:
yum search foo

Thanks spooon for your answer. We had to go another path.

Yum is not available for RHEL, you're supposed to use the up2date tool for updating packages and install only from the package manager, which is really limited.

I did the following: created a directory called /root/diskls and for every disk made a listing of the packages available
Code:
ls /media/cdrom/Redhat/RPMS/ > disk1
Then I created the following script that lets me search for a package and see if it's installed:

Code:
#!/bin/bash

if [ $# -ne 1 ]; then
echo "-----------------------------------------------------------"
echo "Searches the RPM packages matching the given name. Returns"
echo "a list with the corresponding install-CD reference"
echo "usage: $0 <string>"
echo "-----------------------------------------------------------"
exit
fi

length() {
  length=`echo "$@" | wc -c | cut -c1-8`
  length=$(( $length -1 ))
  echo $length
}

cd /root/diskls
myTMP=/tmp/searchpkg$$
grep -r $1 * > $myTMP
NBMATCH=`cat $myTMP | wc -l`
if [ $NBMATCH -eq 0 ]; then
  echo "No package by that name found"
else
  echo -e "DISK\tI\tPACKAGE"
  echo "----------------------------------------------------"
  while read LINE
  do
    DSK=`echo $LINE |awk -F: '{print$1}'`
    PKG=`echo $LINE |awk -F: '{print$2}'`
    PKGNAME=`echo $PKG |awk -F. '{print$1}'`
    end=`length $PKGNAME`
    end=$(( $end - 2 ))
    PKGNAME=`echo $PKGNAME | cut -c1-$end`
    inst=`rpm -q $PKGNAME | grep "is not installed"`
    if [ "$inst" = "" ]; then
      inst="x"
    else
      inst="-"
    fi
    echo -e "$DSK\t$inst\t$PKGNAME ($PKG)"
  done < $myTMP
  echo "----------------------------------------------------"
  echo "$NBMATCH matches found"
fi
rm $myTMP
I then do the following, for example
Code:
# searchpkg moz
DISK    I       PACKAGE
----------------------------------------------------
disk2   x       mozilla-nspr (mozilla-nspr-1.7.7-1.4.2.i386.rpm)
disk2   x       mozilla-nspr (mozilla-nspr-1.7.7-1.4.2.x86_64.rpm)
disk2   x       mozilla-nss (mozilla-nss-1.7.7-1.4.2.i386.rpm)
disk2   x       mozilla-nss (mozilla-nss-1.7.7-1.4.2.x86_64.rpm)
disk4   -       mozilla (mozilla-1.7.7-1.4.2.x86_64.rpm)
disk5   -       mozilla-chat (mozilla-chat-1.7.7-1.4.2.x86_64.rpm)
disk5   -       mozilla-devel (mozilla-devel-1.7.7-1.4.2.x86_64.rpm)
disk5   -       mozilla-dom-inspector (mozilla-dom-inspector-1.7.7-1.4.2.x86_64.rpm)
disk5   -       mozilla-js-debugger (mozilla-js-debugger-1.7.7-1.4.2.x86_64.rpm)
disk5   -       mozilla-mail (mozilla-mail-1.7.7-1.4.2.x86_64.rpm)
disk5   -       mozilla-nspr-devel (mozilla-nspr-devel-1.7.7-1.4.2.x86_64.rpm)
disk5   -       mozilla-nss-devel (mozilla-nss-devel-1.7.7-1.4.2.x86_64.rpm)
----------------------------------------------------
12 matches found
And then I just have to insert the corresponding cd, rpm -iv packagename and it's installed.

An additional step is needed for synchronizing with the up2date database

up2date -p

Hope this can help somebody. My script is really a quick hack, there is two known problems:
1) If a file contains a "." inside their package name like openoffice.org. Then it will tell you "openoffi" is not installed while it maybe is.
2) Also if the major version is 2 digits like for example "sample-package-12.10.23-1.4.2.x86_64.rpm" it will look if "sample-package-" is installed. Don't know if the answer will be correct.

These two problems occur because I use the "." as a delimiter in the following line of the code: PKGNAME=`echo $PKG |awk -F. '{print$1}'`
You might want to fine-tune this script if you care.
