how to download RHEL 4 WS

I've been trying to download the Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS 4 Update 1 (x86) ISOs from the past several days. I had registered a long time back and also subscribed to the free 30-day evaluation subscription for which I got access to the Red Hat Network. Now I've been trying to download it but all in vain. I have a 256 Kbps Cable connection and I've also tried to use many download managers even that curl but it doesn't work. I'm currently using Windows 2000 SP4 and would like to switch over to Linux once and for all. I have heard a lot about RHEL and so I wanted to give it a try. I am particularly interested in RHEL 4 WS. First I thought I have problems with my browsers, so I even installed Mozilla FireFox, Netscape 7.2, 8.0.1, but nothing seems to solve my problem. Also a lot of download manmgers doesn't work. I'm desperately in need of the RHEL 4 WS copy. I would be extremely pleased if you could help me with problem. I would apppreciate nay kind of help from your side. If its possible for you'll to get me the CDs, then nothing like that; if its not possible please suggest me some alternatives.

you could download fedora core 4 if you want... here's the release announcement from distrowatch.com, it has links to download mirrors and also BitTorrent files:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS for technical power-user desktops or high-performance computing
. And Update 4 is minor version number, in your case RHEL 4.4 or RHEL 4.5. I believe that and 4.4 or 4.5 version should be basically the same for your application. Since RHEL has frozen major version numbers of almost all of it's packages and only runs bugfixes, You should be safe also with latest RHEL 4.8 version.

There are iso's for CentOS 4.4 version. CentOS is build from RHEL source packages, but lack's RHEL's paid support, and strives to binary compatibility, so you can use it instead of RHEL if you do not want to pay for support.

I can recommend it for testing purposes, but if you need peace of mind for production server implementation, I suggest you request from Red Hat 4.4 iso files and pay them for support.

So to recap, For production purposes, best is to stick with RHEL WS 4.4 (paid subscription), or for testing use CentOS 4.4. After you are satisfied with performance, you can update on 4.8 (latest). I am 90% sure that "Enterprise Linux 4.0 AS(or ES) Update 7" would run Geoframe just fine.

You can see package versions for 4.8 on http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=redhat

Dear DrLove73,

Thank you very much for your help.

I found RHEL 4.0 ws , I downloaded kernel-2.6.9-42.EL.src.rpm from below addresses.would the 4.0 version be updated to 4.4 by the use of this RPM?if yes , how?

http://lwn.net/Alerts/195041/

ftp://updates.redhat.com/enterprise/...-42.EL.src.rpm

now i have three choices:

1.using RHEL 4.0 ws and updating to 4.4 by above rpm file (if possible)

2.CentOS 4.4

3.Enterprise Linux 4.0 AS(or ES) Update 7

which one is the best for my case?

Only installing new kernel will not update entire distribution to 4.4! You need update 4 CD's/DVD. If you have not paid for RHEL subscription, I suggest that you try with CentOS 4.4 and disable further updates. And if you have the intention of buying Geoframe, or you already bought it, I would suggest e-mail-ing them and asking their support if they had any expirience with CentOS 4.4.

If you have RHEL subscription, or planing to do so, I would contact Red Hat and ask the to send you update 4 media, and again disable further updates.

First, you reopened a five year old thread...please don't do that, open your own thread for your own question.

And you don't just copy an ISO image to a USB stick. If you want to do a USB installation, Google has info on how to make that happen, but the best way is to burn the ISO to a CD/DVD, and boot from it. Also, be aware that the C:, D: drive concept doesn't apply in unix/linux. When you install, you'll have to pick the part of the disk you want to install to.

Also, there are special instructions on how to dual-boot Windows XP and Linux. Again, Google has links to all this, and it's been covered on this site many times.
