how do you send control codes (condensed print) to printers in RH?

HI all,
I did some serching on "condensed" and "condensed print" "control codes" and did not see anything so here's my problem

I have a customer that would like all print jobs that go to a specific HP-laser printer to be condensed. I've done this many times in unix (SCO IBM etc...) by editing the printer strings directly. I would set up two printers that go to the same device, but one of the printers would have the control codes for condensed print in their init strings. I don't see how to do that in RHES. FRom what I've read linux creates these files on the fly so you really cant edit any type of configuration file.

I have been able to affect print size with the "-o cpi=18" option in the LP command. The print is reduced but it does not look right, almost like its off center.

If someone could give me a link to read, documentation, or some quick pointers I would be very grateful. I've been doing unix since ATT and XeniX and right about now I'm feeling very dumb.

I only have remote access via putty so i do not have access to the GUI client.

I think they are going to have to send me a distro copy if they want me to start supporting this. :D

thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe i'm asking the wrong question. How are you controlling printer options in linux? How are you switching modes (compressed, regular etc...) from an lp standpoint? just "-o" options?

does linux even have the ability to send control codes from lp?
