How can I get RPM to recognize the latest version of tar?

I am using Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES version 4. It came with tar 1.14 and I've just installed tar 1.20. Unfortunately, when I run 'rpm -qa | grep "tar" rpm only sees the older version. How can I get it to recognize tar 1.20?

If you installed the new version from source, then RPM won't know about it. The RPM database only contains information about packages installed from rpms.

if you did a source build then you can make your own rpm package using
" rpm-build " package
search google http://www.google.com/linux

that is the ONLY way to get rpm to recognize a source build
i just keep tabs on what i build then and if something from yum needs a newer rpm i build that from the source too . This can get into an unmanageable mess very quickly .
A bit old but

fedora and red hat are very close
