having to stop and start alsa

Hi guys,
my first time and first thread here.
I complied and installed the 2.6.11 vanilla kernel. Modified all the necessary scripts to cope with the change. I enabled sound support but not the drivers(OSS and alsa). I installed alsa and configured most of the application to use it instead of oss. OSS emulation was also enabled so that other older prog could use it. Everything else is working fine. Theres a tiny problem, when I start x, I have to stop and restart alsasound otherwise applications using alsa won't give sound. I checked the logs, something like hardware on use. Its fine under textmode though. Any clue guys?

I don't use X more often so my system is set to boot to text mode directly.
I think when i startx it tries to initialize the sound driver, it probably tries oss and this might be the cause of my problem. Any way to change this?

I think you could set the .xinitrc file in your home directory to start and stop alsa using as a work around
