GRUB GRUB GRUB..... error

Hi All ,

After fresh image restoration , GRUB fails to load the operating system and instead fills the screen with an endless sequence of GRUB GRUB GRUB..............

We are pretty sure that there is nothing wrong with the Image that we have restored.

The OS on it is RHEL 4.0 ..... Any help ??

GRUB consists of multiple stages. Usually, only stage1 is installed to the MBR (that is, loaded directly by the BIOS) and the physical location of stage2 (which usually resides in /boot/grub/stage2) is patched into stage1. If you restore the corresponding partition on filesystem level, stage2 can end up being located at a different physical location, leading stage1 to load some random data from the original address.

In short, you need to reinstall GRUB using a rescue disc and either grub-install or a GRUB shell (loaded directly from the rescue disc or by the "grub" command). Both methods are explained in detail in the manual (see "info grub").

boot the os in rescue mode, after chroot /mnt/sysimage, just enter grub command. If you have stage1 installed then u can see grub> prompt. enter command " root(hd0,0)" ( I hv assumed that your hdd is primary master and boot is installed at first partition ). If it fails then recover stage2 with command "setup(hd0)". After all success load kernel and initrd. cheers
