GNOME print manager not finding installed printer
 

Running RH 9.0 Running GNOME Print Manager says "No printers found. Run the printer configuration tool?" Choosing "OK" pulls up the Printer Configuration application and indeed my printer has already been installed and listed with its queue name. I am able to print a CUPS test page successfully from the config window. Exiting printer configuration returns to GNOME PM and printer still is not present? Thank you for any suggestions.

You using printconf-gui aka printtool? And you delete any existing printer and configure a new one, correct? What does it say on http://localhost:631/admin ?

First, thank you. Yes, I am using the GUI and deleting with reconfig did not work either. Now if I try to access http://localhost:631/admin I get "Forbidden - you don't have permission to access the resource on this server." This occurs even if I am logged in as root. I tried to run QTCups and assign anonymous login but it will not keep this setting.

Printer Problems
 

I am also having problems, both with being unable to delete printers under "Browsed queues", and with the proper operation of printers (cannot communicate with local or Samba printers from my RH9 notebook).

What is that localhost file supposed to look like, please?

One more item, CUPS is asking for an account and password -- what account and password? Thanks! dmc

I had the same problem and couldn't figure it out. I skipped that step and my printer/scanner works just fine. I tried to find a CUPS site that needed a registration but was unsuccessful.

Not sure what printer you are using but I went to www.linuxprinting.org and found my printer and how to get it working along with the scanner.

I have tried two printers, an Okidata 8W and a HP Deskjet 500C. Here at home the Deskjet responds but prints garbage. At work the Okidata doesn't respond at all.

Is there a way to clear everything out re. printer setup and any garbage that may be in a queue somewhere? Either the gui or command line is interface fine, though I tend to trust the command line to be less likely to miss something.

I ran into this issue last night, while trying to print a document for my wife. This was a new install of RH 9.0.

I had to save multiple formats of the OOo document to a floppy and print in a WinXP session. Not a good way to build up Linux to others.

This should be clarified for newbies, at least I found it very confusing until I realized that when you mean localhost you actually mean the default name for the internet of my machine as assigned by my distro. The default on a non-networked machine is localhost but if you change it or on a networked machine it will be different, most likely. What I did was type http://192.168.1.1:631/admin (this is the default IP from my cable modem so you may want to use 127.0.0.1 instead) and then when it asked me for a username and password I simply typed in my machines username and password (like when you are logging into your machine) and I was fine. If you have multiple users setup I imagine you can enter your root username and password but since I'm the only that uses my machine it didn't matter to me.

Initially I was unable to access localhost:631 and found the only way to do this was to edit the cupsd.conf file (/etc/cups/cupsd.conf). I temporarily changed the Deny and Allow parameters to None and All, respectively and was able to access the page as root. Printer is listed in the cupsd.conf and printers.conf files but still can not "see" the printer from any application.

You are describing the same thing that I am seeing. I even tried to print from the KDE print manager, which actually 'sees' my printer, but it tells me that there is a problem with cups.

I think that I will re-install RH9 for this and other reasons.

BTW: Mandrake 9.0 and 9.1 did not give me near the amount of headaches that RH9.0 is giving me. Oh... I'm sorry... they are not headaches, they are 'learning opportunities'. At least that is what I tell my wife when she complains about the quantity of my 'screen' time.

I re-installed RH9.0, and can print now. I think that my problem was with 'messing around' with the Network Configuration and turning off the wrong services. Anyway, I have been able to print!

Great! I don't have much to loose so I will try that as well. BTW, for what it is worth, I did not have this problem with RH8 or Mandrake 8 or 9.
