Gnome issues
I installed Red Hat 9 awhile ago and use it to run an Oracle Server. Everything was going great until one day after running the Red hat Update Agent, i begand getting errors at startup. A few apps fail, and most signifigantly, I can no longer minimize windows and then recall them. It seems that the update is responsible for this as it is the only change that was made to the system. I've included the error messages below. Does anyone have any ideas? (and yes, I am a unix novice)
There was an error starting the Gnome Settings Daemon Some things such as themes sounds or background settings mau not work correctly. The Settings Daemon started too many times. Gnome will try to restart Settings Daemon next time you log in.
The panel encountered a problem while loading OAFID: Gnome_Pager Applet. Details Unknown CORBA exception id 'IDL: omg.org/CORBA/INV_OBJREF:1.0' Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?
The following apps also fail w/ similar error messages:
TasklListApplet
GNOME_GWeatherApplet
GNOE_SystemTrayApplet
GNOME_ClockApplet

Gnome issues
First check the system date with the 'date' command.
I just had this same problem. When I checked the date, it was something like Jan. 1968. Gnome seems to be sensitive about the date being somewhat correct.
I changed the date and the problem was solved.

What is your hardware? Red Hat 9 is very, very, very old. After that Fedora Core 1, 2, 3, 4, and now 5 has been released.
Please upgrade.
