Gnome error on startup in RH9

Recently I started getting the following error when I log in to Rh9:

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.

The last error message was:

Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

When this occurs the sound settings are gone and the RedHat Network icon is not displayed.

Is there a file that I can look at or delete so this can be rebuilt correctly. I have no idea how this occured or how to fix it.

Thanks!

Bob

make sure the process gconfd-2 is not running anymore and remove the
lock in ~/.gconfd/lock or even ~/.gconfd/* *AND* in .gconf/*.lock

Thanks for the help, I was able to find and kill the processes you mentioned and deleted the locks. I also deleted my desktop configuration file which seemed to help.

Now I have lost the RHN notification icon at the lower right corner of the panel. What do I do to restore the icon and make it live again?

Thanks again for the help. I wonder what caused several gconfd-2's to be running at the same time?

This problem is not going away, even if I kill the gconfd-2 process and delete the locks mentioned above. Typically the initial boot or reboot worked OK, but if I log out and then log back in I get the error message all over again.

What is causing this? Is there anything I can delete to have rebuilt or manually rebuild to correct this?

Thanks...

what did you do that precipitated the problem? anything at all, software install, upgrade

what happens if you run up2date and upgrade the gtk apps?

I can't think of anything that I have installed or done that preceeded this problem. Today I installed the Ximian Desktop 2 (I like the Dropline style theme better than the default RH Bluecurve) to see if that might resolve the problem, but the same error occurs.

I remember changing permissions on some of my user files that I had copied to a CD and then back. Could I have accidently changed a user permission or owner setting for 1 or more of the gnome desktop files?

I normally keep the machine in question on all the time and log in and out as needed.
