Garbled text on screen
 

This is actually a problem on whitehat, but im sure ive seen it before on redhat as well. When the computer is turned on, all the text on the screen is garbled, its not that its randomly placed exactly, but all letters have been replaced by symbols and other letters. If I log into the machine by ssh, the text is fine and appears in uk english. I am pretty sure this has been caused by me removing an rpm. Which rpms/programs being removed could cause these symptoms?

Seems more to do with graphics than simply having uninstalled an rpm. I'm assuming this is just from the console though? Have you passed any video parameters from your bootloader and done the obvious such as check the monitor cable and the graphics is actually functioning correctly?

I am almost entirely sure the monitor and graphics card, physically, arent the problem. For a few reasons, firstly when I installed whitebox the text appeared as normal, this means right through the installation process, and after reboot when it came up with a login prompt, I could also log in and the text would be fine. I then went through a process of removing rpms which I *thought* were redundant for the system I was planning on running. After removing these, I rebooted the system, and the text had become garbled. Addidionally, the bios flash screen and the grub bootloader both appear without corruption, it is only when linux starts to load that the text garbling appears. I dont have any graphics related lines in my grub.conf.

By console, I assume you mean what appears when the machine has finished booting? The machine boots into runlevel 3 and displays a garbled login prompt. If I log in from a seperate machine via ssh, the text is displayed fine.

I believe there is a console fonts package and settings, or at least under Gentoo there is as I had to disable it whilst building up a new server on a Sparc box at the weekend. Not sure about Red Hat, but might something along the same lines. Would have been interesting to see if the problem presented itself straight after a reboot regardless of whether packages were removed. Hopefully someone with a bit more understanding of Red Hat could shed some light on the issue :)
