file system error on reboot and not accepting root password

I arebooted the Linux server and it will not reboot.
It says filesystem error and enter ctl D or password for maintenance.
It will not accept the root password.

We tried booting in single user mode to chane the password but we do not get to the point where we can do it.

How do we resolve this?

Hi and welcome to LQ.

Try booting from a live CD such as gparted and do a filesystem check on your root (/) partition using fsck.
