File Corruption in Red Hat 7.3 File Server
Hi, I'm running a Gateway dual PIII 600 MHz Red Hat Linux 7.3 kernel 2.4.18 i686 file server running netatalk 1.6.3 and samba 2.2.5-1.i386. I have Macs running OS 9.1 and a Windows XP. On the windows machines, some files written in microsoft word for mac 98 show up corrupt, some don't. But the same files on the macs show up fine. Likewise, some files on the macs show up corrupt but show up fine on the windows machine. I don't know what's going on. Please help if you can.

Doesn't sound Linux related to me, but maybe problems with the versions of Word you are running.

You can do this... get the md5sum program for windows here:

Run that against a file on your windows box and compare the answer you get when you run the Linux command line "md5sum" on the same file. If they are the same, then you don't have a corruption problem. Not to mention, if you can open it at all in either version of Word, I would say its probably not corrupted. The files may include features that are incompatible between these two versions of Word.

Thanks, I'll try that. Also, I'm having the same problem with some Quark Xpress 4.11 files. Sometimes they show up as a null file with zero file size on the windows machine, but they open on the Macs. If I upgrade Samba do you think it will help?

I doubt upgrading Samba will have any effect.
