I think your ethernet-card is newer than the kernel, so that's maybe a reason it doesn't work...
(I've had the same thing in PCLinuxOS 2009 with a new laptop (Marvell Ethernet card was completely dead in linux), had to install a more recent kernel (downloading it on another computer and install it via the kernel...)
=> or did you install that distro previously and worked that card at that moment?
If you can't upgrade your kernel (and if that's the problem) in RHEL 5.0, try then another distro (like CentOS indeed)

He is not able to use any other NIC so updating using internet is not an option. RHEL 5.4 DVD will have one of recent kernels, along with MANY updates. Since he PAID for RHEL, so it means he wants SUPPORT and there is no point in installing anything else.
