/etc/passwd file with NIS, in redhat

Hi,

This my be a general question, rather than a redhat one, but seeing as i'm only using redhat i decided to post here, hope thats ok.

Does anyone have a url to a good explaination as to how the "x" works in the /etc/passwd file when running NIS, (by "x" i mean the "x" that replaces the password in this file.)

Also An explaination of the +::::: at the end of the file, (is /bin/false needed ?). Also why netgroups are not placed in the shadow file...

I guess I need a general run-down on how the various bits work, and when you should include them or not.

I'm familiar with Solaris /etc/passwd features when using NIS, but from some observation the same rules do not seem to hold true in Redhat...

Thanks,

Inode
