Error with libraries pkg-config
Hello,
I want to install gtk+-2.4.0 on Red Hat 9. Before, I installed pkg-config-0.19 and glib-2.4.0. However, when I run ./configure, I get the follwing:

I look the environmel variable:
[root@EstaLinux gtk+-2.4.0]# echo $PKG_CONFIG_PATH
/usr/local/pkg-config-0.19/bin/pkg-config
[root@EstaLinux gtk+-2.4.0]#
If I run locate pkg-config, I get:
[root@EstaLinux gtk+-2.4.0]# locate pkg-config
/usr/bin/pkg-config
/usr/share/man/man1/pkg-config.1.gz
[root@EstaLinux gtk+-2.4.0]#
This are the old versions.
The pkg-config.1 file of the new version exists in
/usr/local/pkg-config-0.19/man/man1, but it is not a .gz file.
What can I do?

Most likely you have to install glib-devel and pango-devel (same version of their counterparts glib and pango) since the pkg-config files are provided by the devel packages together with the headers and libraries needed to compile applications. Anyway, never thought about installing a newer version of Red Hat/Fedora/CentOS? You may solve many problems in a short time!

I have to use Red Hat 9 because I have to work with an application that is certified only with Red Hat, so the change the operating system is not solution for me...:-(

Ok. I know that there are some situations which force to stick with an old release. Have you tried to install the devel packages? What is the output of

Why do you think, that the prehistoric Redhat 9
is required ?? I doubt that "Redhat Certified"
is valid for RH9 : Declared obsolete in 2004.
'gtk 2.4.x' : That would be Redhat Enterprise EL4
or 'Redhat' CentOS 4 ... same OS, EL4 payed for,
CentOS 4 free, both including gtk 2.4.x
Or may be the newer Redhat EL 5.3 or Redhat CentOS5.2
could be used ??
....
