error installing red hat 9


i cannot install red hat 9 when i try to install it gives this error message

vfs: cannot open root device "" or 48:05
please append a correct "root=" boot option
kernel panic: vfs: unable to mount root fs on 48:05

anyone have the solution please go ahead and reply

There are a couple of situations that might cause this error. The most probable cause is a misconfiguration of where your root is in grub.conf. Post your grub.conf and the output from fdisk -l /dev/hda. Replace /dev/hda if the drive you are using is something different.

Another possibility is that the type of drive or controller you have is not part of the kernel or inside initrd.

i want some reasonable answer. i have not installed RH9 instead when i try to install it gives this message.

Try a current linux version. Red Hat 9 is old and outdated and unsupported. It may not handle your hardware (don't know as you haven't said what it is).

Interesting response waqas_on_mars. I had been dealing with a similar question and assumed you already installed. amosf has an answer more inline with your situation. Chances are your hardware was not around when RH9 was built and is not included in the distribution. You'll need to get a more up to date distribution with a newer kernel. If you want a free Red Hat like distribution try Fedora Core, CentOS, or White Box linux.
