Angry ds: no socket driiver loaded - kernel panic

I am running Red Hat 9.0 with 2.4.20-28 SMP and have compiled the kernel to 2.4.23 to allow for ACL. However when rebooting I get a kernel panic right after the line: "rs: no socket drivers loaded".

I can boot in my original config and go back to tweak the modules and drivers to load but nothing seems to make a difference. Googling this subject comes back with plenty of references to lots of questions and no answers.

Anyone have any advice, or better yet how you over came the same issue?
