DMA aint working ...

Hello, again

I`am having a low disk speed. The hdparm -Tt /dev/hd[a,b,d] gives me this in avrg. :
/dev/hda:
Timing cached reads: ~ 5352.36 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: ~ 6 Mb/sec

and that after running some optimization on those disks :
hdparm -c3 -m32 -a1024 -k1 /dev/hd[a,b,d]

ofcourse the main problem its a DMA, but when Iam try to run the hdparm -d1
its return me :
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted

I tried many things to enable DMA in kernel but nothing works.
the lspci -v | grep IDE gives me :
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation: Unknown device 2920 (rev 02) (prog-if 8a [Master SecP PriP])
00:1f.5 IDE interface: Intel Corporation: Unknown device 2926 (rev 02) (prog-if 85 [Master SecO PriO])
03:00.1 IDE interface: JMicron Technologies, Inc. JMicron 20360/20363 AHCI Controller (rev 02) (prog-if 85 [Master SecO PriO])

My Motherboard is GiGabyTe GA-P35-ds3r/s3r with the
intel ICH9R chipset on it. As far as I know the kernel should include it.
My kernel :
2.6.9-42.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Jul 12 23:27:17 EDT 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

I tried to run make menuconfig and recompile the kernel but after that when Iam running run its giving me an error. Iam running the make from
/usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-42.EL-smp-i686/
the error :
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `init/main.o', needed by `init/built-in.o'. Stop.
make: *** [init] Error 2

If anyone have any solution on how to make the kernel use the right module I will be very glad .. =)

BW the output from lsmod :
.
.
ahci 18885 0
libata 67613 1 ahci
.
.

and there is no such thing in lsmod like pata_jmicron ...

Or maybe Iam compieling the kernel in the wrong way. Please help me =)

I think you need an updated kernel. When intel came out with their core2duo motherboards there were all kinds of problems with that jmicron ide controller that was included on many intel chipset boards. Also, I've experienced many problems with ide hard drives on fedora after they went to the new libata that rolled all ide support into libata. I'm not that familiar with The RH enterprise kernels but I suspect that is what you are running into to.

Apparently, you have AHCI enabled in your bios setup. If you don't have any sata drives, you might want to try setting your bios in some type of ide legacy mode instead of AHCI and see if that helps.

Thanks for reply ...
Ok some history. When I first time tried to install Linux on that motherboard I enabled AHCI and put a SATA work at native mod. etc. but the system didnt work he just keept asking me about drivers or driver disk, A looked dayes in Inet but couldnt find any thing. A have 3 Western Digital SATA II disk. But the Linux see them as hda,b,d ...
I installed the system with 3 RAIDs. Two Raid 1, devices and 1 Raid 5 device. But the speed of rebuilding was killing me, Itried every thing I thought the problem was In my RAID.

After some testing in all diffren modes I came to that DMA isnt working, althought it should work with SATA drivers like he was build in.
Iam really dont know what to do. Like I said I have RH 4 Enterprise.

And if there is no other way just to add the modules to kernel. And make him use them for ide?? May I should use Fedora latest version instead?

After playing with Kernel last night I managed to remove the jmicron modules so the lspci returned me Inter Corporation device unknow, And after some more games my kernel got really ill and died ... ao Iam now installing the system all over.

How could I upgrade the Kernel to new ? And what is the version the support that Intel Chipset ?
Thank you ahead ..
