diskdump or netdump?

Hello everyone,

i am looking at the diskdump utility for my servers. however there is this part whereby i have to specify a partition for memory dump and all data will be lost for that partition.

#

The diskdump daemons reserved partition can be specified in the /etc/sysconfig/diskdump. The file to specify which partition.

DEVICE=/dev/sde1

#

Next step is to initialize the partition for use

WARNING, ANY DATA ON IT WILL BE LOST.

# service diskdump initialformat

my servers have the following partitions, may i know which one should i use? or should i use netdump instead?

[root@pss1app1 ~]# df -k
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/cciss/c0d0p2 67891252 50014980 14427520 78% /

none 1992480 0 1992480 0% /dev/shm

[root@pss1app1 ~]# more /etc/fstab
# This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details

LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2

Hi,
in order to use diskdump you need to have an additional free partition dedicated for diskdump. For example, my hp c-class blade needs 12gb of empty partition for diskdump to work. You can also use the swap partition but it's size needs to be large enough too.

For example, my server below has an extra partition(c0d0p4) for diskdump

root@pss2db3a@PROD ~]#cd /dev/cciss/
root@pss2db3a@PROD ~]#ls
c0d0 c0d0p1 c0d0p2 c0d0p3 c0d0p4
root@pss2db3a@PROD ~]#df -k
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/cciss/c0d0p3 219522148 23671232 184699800 12% /
tmpfs 4 0 4 0% /dev/vx
/dev/cciss/c0d0p1 132206 23235 102145 19% /boot
none 6150488 0 6150488 0% /dev/shm

Considering this is usually for a crash dump, I'd recommend netdump in case the system doesn't recover...
