Did anyone get this email from red hat?

Dear Red Hat Linux user,

We are approaching the published end of life date for errata support
for our final Red Hat Linux distribution. We'd like to remind you of
this date and the options available to you for migrating your Red Hat
Linux implementations: Red Hat Enterprise Linux and the Fedora Project.

Red Hat Linux 9 distribution will reach its end-of-life for errata
maintenance on April 30, 2004. This means that as of May 1, 2004
we will not be producing new security, bugfix, or enhancement updates
for this product.

There are a variety of options available for migration. Red Hat
offers Red Hat Enterprise Linux as well as the new Fedora Project.
Our Red Hat Linux Migration Resource Center can help you find the Red
Hat solution best suited for your needs:

Does it mean they are getting rid of red hat 9 and comming out with red hat 10, or does it mean that they are getting rid of distrubting red hat for free? I dont get it.

LOL, there will be no R/H 10
R/H is not going to support the home user anymore.........
given that, I would not use any of their products at all!!

some people told me that I should change over to Mandrake. I got two servers and one laptop running RH. Does it mean I have to start from scratch? Is there anything I need to relearn? I'm been using rh since rh5 and thats where I started to learn about linux.

ziggie, I wouldn't recommend going Mandrake, from what I hear, they will be pulling a move such as this also!

Without the LOL, no, there is no redhat 10, but there is however fedora. This is redhat's new line of home user products. you'll find fedora core 1 very similar to your redhat 9 machine, and as always with new versions, there is some software that needs things worked out. t

The good news is that they have many updated packages like the kernel, newer gnome and evolution packages. All in all, i think the hardest thing you'll deal with is remembering to not call it redhat 10.

Fedora is probably your best bet for free Red Hat. Essentially, could be called RH 10, but why would want to get into double digits?

This would seem odd if Mandrake Club support is really high (and I believe it is). Do you have a link?

I assume that while installing Fedora you would lose all your stuff...is there a way to save all of your files and use them after Fedora has been installed?

The Fedora Core installer does not force you to format your /home partition. If you don't have a separate /home partition, that is a mistake. You should have created one. Also, regularly backing up your data is a good idea.

heh the good thing about shitty motherboards is that they require you to partion harddrives over 7gigs big...so yea i have a couple of partitions.../home being one of them...

if i moved my /usr directory over to another partition and then installed Fedora where /usr orginally was and then moved back /usr would everythign work or would there be any conflicts?

By doing that you would overwrite most of Fedora Core's newly installed executables and data files. Don't do it.

Is there anyway to move back only your programs...can't you copy only files that arent already there so as not to overwrite any of Fedora's files?

???

Not enough input.

You can upgrade Red Hat Linux to Fedora Core and keep any extra RPM packages or stuff installed manually into /usr/local. I don't know what your installation scenario looks like.
