/dev/sda Input/Output Error

Hi all,

I'm running RHEL 4.0 on a system. I just did a fresh installation. During boot up the system gives various errors such as:

ERROR: asr reading /dev/sda [Input/Output error]

It gives similar erros for:

sil
isw
jmicron
lsi
nvidia

I have a feeling there is something wrong with the system's drive. In addition this the when i rebooted the system, it indicated that filesystem was not checked for like 4000 days or something like that and forced check.

What could possibly be wrong, i'm curious?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about sata drive, but /dev/sda is usually associated with USB flash drives. At least on my systems.

felton57: i know but anything that uses the SCSI emulation in linux goes under sda, like pendrives and sata drives.

sidra: Judging by the Input/Output error, it could suggest your harddisk is corrupt or have bad sectors. I would try booting with a Linux Live disk (CRUX is good ) and doing

[CODE]dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda1[CODE]

and then

[CODE]dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1[CODE]

that fills the disk with random numbers then zeros it out. After that try installing RHEL4 again and see if it works.
It worked for me when I had similar read/write errors with Debian.
