Desktop effects for KDE 3.5 in RedHat 5.1.19.6, compiz

Dear all,

I am struggling with enabling some desktop effects to better organize my works. I found a package compiz which provides awesome effects (cube desktop switching, zoom out and display all windows in desktop so you can easily select one you want). I am using redhat 5.1.19.6

I check that compiz is installed:
[root@localhost Software]# yum list | grep compiz
compiz.i386 0.0.13-0.37.20060817gi installed
compiz-devel.i386 0.0.13-0.37.20060817gi sl-base

and I can enable desktop effects in GNOME environment (Setting->Preferences->Desktop Effects).

BUT I can't enable compiz for KDE 3.5. I haven't found any GUI to help setup compiz for KDE. I tried command line and hit severe faults:

[root@localhost Software]# compiz --replace
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b
compiz: No stencil buffer. Clipping of transformed windows is not going to be correct when screen is transformed.

All windows lose their borders and I can't switch to other desktops.

In short summary, do you know how to install/enable/configure compiz for KDE 3.5 in RedHat 5.1.19.6. Is there any package do the same things as compiz but works in KDE 3.5

I used KDE since I started using Linux, so I want these effects for KDE and continue my learning curve and normal daily work as well.

Thank you in advance,

Compiz & Beryl have merged. It's now called compiz-fusion. You also need to have the ccsm (Compiz Config Settings Manager) package installed.

The Emerald package provides various window decorations. You can download a script to check if your system will run Compiz-Fusion without any problems.

Get the script from here: Compiz-Check

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I think my system is good for compiz-fusion

[root@localhost Software]$ ./compiz-check

Gathering information about your system...

Distribution: RedHat
Desktop environment: KDE
Graphics chip: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
Driver in use: intel
Rendering method: AIGLX

Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system...

Checking for texture_from_pixmap... [ OK ]
Checking for non power of two support... [ OK ]
Checking for composite extension... [ OK ]
Checking for FBConfig... [ OK ]
Checking for hardware/setup problems... [ OK ]

Do you know where to download compiz-fusion, ccsm (Compiz Config Settings Manager) and Emerald package for RedHat 5 (Enterprise). I saw a lot of these for Fedora circular around but can't find the one for RedHat Enterprise.

I'm afraid i don't know where you can obtain pre-compiled binaries for redhat 5. From what i read it's not likely that it would work with redhat 5 anyway. See this post in relation to running it on redhat 9: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...fusion-623269/

Oh I forgot to mention in my previous post, it's not a good idea to work in root mode. Any mistakes you make could have serious consequences system wide.

Ok, when you post a question be aware that there is both a RH5 and a RHEL5(Red Hat Enterprise Linux) versions. RH5 is very, very, old. I do not know when support was dropped for RH5 but support for RH9 was dropped in 2003.

Assuming RHEL5, take a look for the epel repo. You may also want to look at Centos, as it is RHEL with the logos removed. Centos is free to download/update (unlike RHEL).

Dear all,

This is temporary solution for my problem:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RenderingProject/compiz
One of the side effect is that you don't have virtual desktop anymore, just 1 splitting desktop that you can switch to one side to other. Because of that all the icons of windows present at the task bar instead of grouping in virtual desktops. Other than that I enjoy compiz functionality.

Anyway I am considering change to more modern and well supported Linux distribution.

Thank you all,
