dd backup and restore command

I was using the following commands to backup and restore my unix system and applications.
Backup #dd if=/dev/rdsk/hd00 of=/dev/rmt0 bs=512k

Restore #dd if=/dev/rmt0 of=/dev/rdsk/hd00 bs=512k

These commands are working fine on the unix system to backup and restore from a DDS-4 data cartridge.

We now have the same applications running on Red Hat 9.0 and these commands are not working. Is there a difference in red hat from unix?

What i want to do is copy the system and applications from a scsi hard drive to a DDS-4 tape and be able to restore it. ie like a norton ghost image.

Regards Jim

Not enough information provided.

Are all the hardware subsystems working correctly? All modules loading correctly? Post the make / model of the tape drive hardware. ie. controller and drive etc.

Post the errors you are receiving from the RH computer.

linux SCSI tape drive ID are typically /dev/st0.

Michael,

Thank you for the reply. The pc is being used to run a burner management system in a power and desalination plant. At present it is in the system and working but i will have to check if the subsystems are working. I am not sure the tape drive is being detected.

The new hardware is as follows. The pc is a HP workstation XW6200 using an intel chipset. The hardrive is MAXTOR ATLAS15k II model 8e036l0 the controller is an ULTRA 320 SCSI 3.5 series 36 GB 15,000 RPM 68 pin.
There is a separate SCSI controller for the tape backup which is made by ADAPTEC ,SCSI card 29160. The tape back up unit is HP storageworks DAT 72.

I hope this helps you.

Regards Jim
