Confusing Message in up2date window about new kernel version and rebooting
 

OK so basically i ran the up2date software selected all pacakegs and let them install. Now when i open up2date i get this message.

Your system is currently running kernel-smp-2.4.20-8, but the newest installed kernel is kernel-smp-2.4.20-24.9 It is recommended that you reboot at the first opportunity to test this new kernel.

So i rebooted and i am still only able to boot to the first version. So i looked in my boot directory and noticed i have new versions of every file except for the 2 files initrd-2.4.20-8smp.img and the other non-multi processor file of the same name. SO what do I do?

FYI - I am running a kinda tweeked install with an HPT raid driver and the hde=norpobe command line instruction.

It appears that the up2date has done all of the compiling already...What are the .img files anyway? I guess i need one of those because the GRUB config file has a line in it pointing to one. How do i make a .img filr and why didnt the updater do it for me?

Hum just need to know what to do.

The new kernel fixes a serious security vulnerability. There is a thread about it in Linux-General I think. Anyway, as the other thread suggests, people running kernels below 2.4.23 should upgrade their kernels. Red Hat has released the 2.4.20-24 kernel-source packages that fix this bug as well. Do some reading on kernel compiling, it's not as hard as it sounds..

HUm so why doesnt it auto matically use the new version that it downloaded?

Will i have to Re-install every time they fix a bug? If so that is stupid, why dont they just fix it and have it patch the install i already spent hours doing?

I don't get this linux sutff, it is REALLY not done the right way. I mean i do an install, from the Red Hat disks and then i update it with with the Red Hat updater and what? It doesn't use the update? Thejn i gotta go through a friggin mess of stuff to use the new kernel?

Someone please help me with this who knows Red Hat...
