confused by my new red hat 9 system

im little confused with my new red hat 9 install. Well i installed it without burning the iso's (no cdrom at the moment) and maybe thats one reason, anyway here are my issues, i hope somone can help me with something . .

1. kernel
uname -a gives my kernel as 2.6.x but in boot there is only a 2.4.x. I'm not really sure why that is and also why i don't have the kernel source.

2. can't read ntfs,
so ill have to recompile the kernel, is this the default !

3. no sound
wow don't you red hat users have sound problems ? i searched this forum and there was only a few posts for sound issues, take a search in slackware for 'sound problems ;) Anyway in slack my sound works fine but in read hat no sound. i ran the sound wizard but i just said i didn't have a supported card (creative audigy) can this be right ? also theres no sound core module or alsa modules made, how can this be ? I thought with red hat i wouldn't have to work so much . .

btw if the installation asked me about ntfs, if i want the kernel src etc i would have said yes, but i was never given the option.

1. You've got a 2.6 kernel somehow. This is a tad strange, as 2.6 came out after RH 9. Either your installation is messed up, or some sort of update was applied. It certainly shouldn't happen with a stock RH9 installation.

2. I don't recall for RH9.

3. For sound, I'd grab the latest alsa source, and build the drivers, libs and utils. This often solves the issue.

The kernel source code is included in RH9. It's not in Fedora Core 3 (you have to get a special package).

What this really sounds like is that your installation somehow got confused with a FC3 installation. This would be strange; is it possible?

I think i have the 2.4 kernel and for some reason uname is reporting that i have a 2.6 kernel. Anyway i compiled a new kernel but the modules wouldn't load so i had to get module-init-tools. The source compile of module-init-tools wouldn't make so i got the rpm. The rpm wouldn't install cos the rpm database is locked and i can't seem to find anyway to unlock it. Theres a fair few threads about this but no answers, this sucks ;(

I have the same problem with sound in Redhat, it won't work with my Audigy card also. I used the onboard sound card on my motherboard.
