CentOS: Dovecot on localhost Can't Find Maildir

I'm having a problem configuring Dovecot (IMAP) (from the CentOS repo) on CentOS 6.3 to use locally (localhost) to serve mail from a Maildir populated by offlineimap.

Dovecot appears not be using the correct mail location. That is set correctly in dovecot.conf and 10-mail.conf as "maildir:/home/(username)/.mail'.

There's mail in .mail that can be read in mutt and evolution when I point them at it.

However, a "telnet localhost 143", followed by logging in and checking the inbox ("b select inbox") produces this:

"* FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft)
* OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft \*)] Flags permitted.
* 0 EXISTS
* 0 RECENT
* OK [UIDVALIDITY 1357065918] UIDs valid
* OK [UIDNEXT 1] Predicted next UID
* OK [HIGHESTMODSEQ 1] Highest
b OK [READ-WRITE] Select completed.
"

There is new mail in the directory, so I assume that, at least, those zeros ought not to be there.

Mail clients setup to use IMAP at 143 on localhost don't find the correct inbox.

I've used Dovecot like this on other distributions, but I've been researching this CentOS problem for a few days with no success.
