Can't find file '/proc/mounts'

I am running Linux Red Hat 9.0. I used Up2Date to udpate my kerel from 2.4.20-8 to 2.4.20-28.9. Upon rebooting I get several failure messages pertaining to /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit line error and then I get the following message:

Fatal: Cannot open file '/proc/mounts' for reading (no such file or directory)

Checking root file system
dup2: bad file description
An error occurred during the file system check

It then drops me to the shell prompt.

Please help!!!

If you are unsure what they mean, please post *all* errors as they could well be related.

..at which you should run a check on the filesystem: "fsck (options) /dev/partitionname".
