Can't Access shares from Windows

I just installed RH9 on my laptop and set up a shared directory using SWAT and for some reason can't access the shares from my XP machine. It always tells me that it can't find the network resource but the laptop shows up on my network. When I try to ping by hostname though it can never get the host name. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I might be missing?

I'm using DHCP on both the laptop and PC going through a router.

Thanks.

make sure you renamed your laptop's network name. I made the mistake of leaving it at "localhost" once...

...okay so I just jumped in the Linux bandwagon!

If you are behind a router it should be safe enough to disbale your firewall temporarily to see if that is the problem:
iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT
iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT
iptables -F

Unless your running your own internal DNS you will have to put the IP number not the name to ping because your network does not understand how to resolve the name with an IP without DNS.

Im behind a D-link 604 router and had the same problem to access... from a win98 pc. I changed the security and set the eth0 as
trusted and then it worked fine. Im not sure if this is the right
way and if I have disabled to much security.

The other way from RH9 to win98 is still not working. The host shows up in the network but I cant access it. "Host not found".

Conclusion: A set up wizard for a home-LAN would have been very useful.......
