can't set file types and programs - SOLVED

In my user account, I can't set "references/file types and programs" for pdf files. This menu used to work, and for root even now works fine, but in my ordinary user account I tried to add acroread to the menu for pdf's and since then it doesn't work at all.

I want to have 3 programs (adobe acroread, xpdf and ggv) in the menu for pdf's. When I bring up the file types menu, I don't see application/pdf anywhere. If I add it (using "add file type" from the main menu) as "PDF documents" "application/pdf" "Documents/Published Materials" it tells me "a mime type with that name already exists, overwrite?"' I say OK, click OK to close the menu. But if I immediately return to the add file type menu and look under Documents/Published Materials, there is no entry for PDFs. I can't add additional programs because that file type has completely disappeared from the menu. If I right-click on a pdf and select "open with' in nautilus, sometimes Acrobat Reader is offered, sometimes not. (The other choices, xpdf and ggv, which USED to be there are gone.) If, instead, I click "other application" nothing happens; it doesn't bring me to the file types menu.

Is some configuration file corrupted? (Which file?) Can I generate a new one, or copy root's file over to this user, or fix it some other way?

Edit: solution was to delete files ~/.gnome/mime-info/user.keys and ~/.gnome/mime-info/user.mime
The system (gnome? x?) immediately generated new ones and now the file types menus work fine.
