Can't install GTK because of missing XFree86-libs
Hi there,
I installed Red Hat 9 for the first time ever this past weekend. I need to install the Gnome Development Toolkit, but I can't because I keep getting the message that "XFree86-libs package is not installed". So I downloaded the RPM off the RHN, but when I try to install it, I get the message that the package is already installed! What gives? How can it be installed and yet still not be found when I try to Add the GTK package? Please help. Thx. |
please provide real file names and version numbers. you should already have the xfree86-libs package installed, otherwise you would have problems runngin X itself.

Okay.. in the System Settings > Add/Remove Packages, I selected "GNOME Software Development" and then clicked [Update]
=> I get the following (X) error message: "Package Not Found The following package could not be found on your system. Installation cannot continue until it is installed. - Unlocatable package: XFree86-libs = 4.3.0-2 - Required by: XFree86-devel" --- Fine. So I go to the RHN and download: "XFree86-libs-4.3.0-2.90.55.i386.rpm" => When I double-click the file, I get the following <!> message: "Package already installed The package "XFree86-libs" is currently installed" --- So, what's up? I can't install the GTK because the libs pkg can't be found, but I can't install the package because it's already there. AAAARRRGGG! Help! |
Hi all,
Very new here...Thanks for all the help! I'm having the same problem, no answer to be found. In trying to use rpmbuild it says I'm missing X devel stuff. I go to install them and it reads: The following packages could not be found on your system. Installation cannot continue until they are installed. XFree86-libs=4.3.0-2 netpbm=9.24-10 Now I'm running under gnomb, and needless to say running rpm -F xfree86-libs-4.3.0-2 says I already have the package. But running: "rpm -qa | grep free" returns nothing. I've recently installed my alsa driver, which required some modprob stuff, and JACK....but I can't see how this would effect anything having to do with X. Thanks for any help available, mike |
I'm a big loser...and new my first post would be a stupid one.
Of course the problem was that I was installing packages off my RH cd, which depended on things that had been updated with up2date. So I just got the current/matching packages and all is well. At least, this is what seems to have happened??? thanks |
