I just installed a Sony CD/DVD Combo drive on Friday myself. Luckily, when I booted, kudzu picked it up and decided the driver to use as well.
# dmesg | grep hdd
hdd: LITE-ON COMBO SOHC-5232K, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdd: ATAPI 52X DVD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33)
I wondered, at first, why I didn't need a Sony driver, but I've been able to read from the drive, write to the drive, play music CD's from the drive, and view DVD's, so I it's working just fine.
I also have a CD-R on the system that is an actual Lite-On drive and uses similar drivers. Even though the driver says it's a DVD drive, it isn't. I took the drive out to check and the drive itself says CD-ROM on top. This made me wonder at first, but, again, it's working:
# dmesg | grep hdc
hdc: Lite-On LTN486S 48x Max, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 48X CD-ROM drive, 120kB Cache, UDMA(33)
