Are you using RH Professional Workstation?
 

I am a RH 9 user. I am contemplating RH Professional Workstation. I am interested in hearing about the experiences of people who have upgraded to RH PW. Is it worth the upgrade? Do third party RH 9 RPMs generally work on RH PW? How about Evolution, OpenOffice, and Mozilla? Can you tell us what the significant changes or improvements are? Any links to screenshots would also be appreciated. I'm having trouble finding independent information about RH PW.

I'm using a download version that RedHat network will support untill my RH9 subscription runs out at the end June,overall I like it,nice and stable works just fine.They could have made
OpenOffice 1.1 but it still works OK.Evolution is 1.4 and Mozilla is 1.4. The only RH9 rpm that I have installed is the MP3 plugin for XMMS and it works OK.Will I stump up the price when my
RH network subscription runs out,to be honest I am not yet sure.But one thing is certain I like it so I might just buy it.Good luck with it if you give it a try.I was going to send you a couple of screenshots but your options do not allow it.

Thanks for the feedback! Where is the download available? I looked all over RHN and the Red Hat web site but I found no info. If I can try it for free that will be a great help.

If you have a RH network subscription for your RH9and it doesn't run out untill after the end of life date for RH9 they will let you download and use RH WS untill your subscription runs out,you can then choose to buy it if you wish.So if you havn't got the above you will have to buy it before you try it.

I have two such subscriptions, expiring in September, but I can't find any information anywhere about where to download RHWP. When I log onto RHN, all I am offered is RH 9 and earlier, and versions of RHEL. Can you tell me where to get it?

You have allready spotted it, the RHEL WS as far as I can tell is just about the same thing.Download the four discs for installation but also get the extras disc,it has java on it.Don't forget get the update 1 version.

Got it. So "Red Hat Professional Workstation" is actually "Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (v. 3 for x86)"?

Can anyone tell me why Red Hat marketing is so obtuse about this? And why the two different prices?

Hello again,glad you found it.RHPWS is for more for desktop users and doesn't have the support options that RHELWS has,thats why you pay more I suppose.Good luck.

I was using RH9 and bought RHEL WS at Bets Buy... Installed it on my notebook and it wouldn't recognize my sound card... Other than that it was alright.. though you're right.. I would have liked OpenOffice 1.1... Either way... I didn't want to use my RHN subscription for my notebook... And THERE IS NO SUPPLIMENTARY UPDATES i.e. - apt-get or yum for WS... So I installed Fedora on the notebook and It worked perfectly... sound card and everything.. Used the RHN applet (which downloads the updates from yum tweaked into the RHN-applet) pretty cool... everything went perfect... have installed the ntfs reader and xmms mp3 plug-in,.... no problems at all... honestly... aside from the Red Hat, Inc. support for WS i wouls say that Fedora is better... it even seems to run a little faster....

Red Hat is marketing as follows as I understand it:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, ES, WS
Red Hat Professional Workstation

As far as RHN is concerned, Red Hat Professional Workstation and Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS use the same channel. The price difference is due to support.

By the way, the AS, ES, and WS do not stand for anything. It's like a car, GL, GLS, GLX except for software.

AS = Advanced Server
ES = Enterprise Server
WS = Worstation

Also, Red Hat Professional Workstation and Enterprise Workstation are the same thing... Even the CDs inside the PW box are labeled as RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX WS.... ao yes, obviously they do use the same channel...

Show me on redhat.com where is states that and I will raise my white flag.
