I am using RH as the root I use GNOME and as the user I use KDE. I successfully used Internet as a user once and then in the next login it connected but did not transfer anything except 66 bytes in and 100 bytes out. This probem persists. Then I removed the modem and again used KPPP. It configured modem and it worked. I have external modem and P IV machine. My distribution is Kernel 2.6.2 KDE 3.2. It is distributed by PCQUEST A Leading Magazine in India
I am very much new to Linux. I do not understand even how to identify the locations of executables, what is a script, which files are executable etc. Please help.
i hope this helps a little: uncheck the "use lock file" box in the KPPP setup gui. if it doesn't work, open the console terminal,
[user]$: su -
password: ********* (your root password)
[root]#: vi /var/lock/LCK..modem
then in the vi editor, hit the Esc key, then :wq Enter
(that's Escape-shift/colon-w-q-Enter to exit editor, write the file, then quit)
this will create a modem lock file in /var/lock that will supercede the /var/lock/LCK..ttyS4 or whatever your modem<--->ppp0 is linked to, and when the script goes looking for the file to "rm" on startup, it'll have a location to drop a new lock file into. at least i think that's how it works.
then try the 'net again. i'm no techie, so hopefully if this is incorrect, someone else will jump in,. but it works under Slackware in the doityerself scripts.
You may want to try initializing your connection by setting it up in Network Configuration and activating the device which automatically dials the number, etc, but does not give you any information about your connection, just that it is active. I have personally found this to be a much more reliable way to connect.
