64 bit - RHEL5
Hey guys I am trying to install the 64 bit RHEL 5 on this system:
MB: DG965RY Proc: Intel core 2 duo E6600 Mem: 4GB Drives: Sata I installed just fine with the 32 bit OS, but for some reason when I try with the 64-bit it hangs at running /sbin/loader and ideas?? Edit: it hangs there for a while, then goes on , but is extremely slow. Then eventually it gets to where it starts the GUI, and I get an X cursor and a black screen but nothing else. |
I haven't got an answer for you, but try looking for errors in the file: /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Perhaps that can give some indications to what is wrong? You could also post it here if it doesn't make sense to you. |

Oh, you're still installing? Sorry, but I can't help you then, I'm not familiar with Red Hat and I don't know how their instal works. Hopefully someone else can help you further!

ya sorry must not have been clear enough, the 32 bit install works perfectly, but the 64 bit install is hanging before the Gui starts. |
Did you ever get past this? I am hanging on the same thing with my amd 64bit. Fedora 7 64 bit installs great but RHEL5 no matter what media I use hangs.

Try specif icing "noapic" at boot time from the cd.

I am facing the same problem as mentioned in this thread... Can you post the solution for this problem... Cheers, KrishSrinath |
What exact version of RHEL are you using? 5.4 or some older one? Also, can you download CentOS 5.4 64bit version and test with that one?

RHEL 64 bit
I have tried with RHEL 5.3 Server x86_64, RHEL 5.2 Server x86_64 and RHEL 5.2 Workstation x86_64, but the same problem occurs.

Hm, can you please explain in detail what exactly happens? and have you tried using different DVD optical device (reader)?
|
I am trying to install RHEL 5.3 Server x86_64 (64 bit) onto my 64 bit x86 intel architecture CPU Board and 4 GB RAM, but the it takes a lot of time in installing, nearly 5 to 6 Hrs or even more to complete the installation. Even tried with installing in text mode but does not make any difference.
Also tried RHEL 5.2 Workstation x86_64 (64 bit), but the same problem persists. Where as when I tried installing RHEL 5 Desktop (32 bit), it is pretty fast, maybe at-most 40 mins to complete the installation. |
32-bit installation looks good. So DVD reader should be OK. I installed 64-bit CentOS 5.4 on Intel Celeron notebook and it went as expected.
Have you tried to mess with BIOS options? What is the model of the Motherboard and CPU? As much details as possible please. Have you tried with lesser RAM? And please confirm that you added "noapic" before/during booting the Installation disk. |
Hi,
first you can check on console 3/4 what has been done and if, what error message was created from the system. You can reach this console by using ctrl-alt-F3 or ctrl-alt-F4 (not sure which). Also you can try to install in text mode, on different hardware this solved my problems during installation. Did you check the installation media at the beginning of install procedure as suggested? Possibly the media has an error. @Krishsrinath: better you open a newx thread your problem seems not to be related to this question. |

Hi, We reduced the RAM size to 2 GB from 4 GB and 64 bit RHEL installion went through successfully with out any problems.... I wonder when 32 bit RHEL has no problem with 4 GB RAM, why is 64 bit RHEL having problem with the 4 GB RAM... Cheers, Krishsrinath |
