** Installation Stuck ***

Hi,

I need help in installing Red Hat Linux, co-existing (ie. dual-boot) with Windows XP Home.

I have 2 harddisks, where C-drive (NTFS) and D-drive (FAT32) are on one physical drive, and Y-drive (NTFS) and Z-drive (FAT32) are on the other physical drive. Windows XP is booted from C-drive.

I have emptied and formatted Z-drive, planning to use it for Linux partition. Z-drive is an extended logical drive.

I could boot up from the Red Hat Linux v8 DVD. As I hit <Enter> to each stage, I am always stuck at the point where the screen prompts the location of package installation: NFS, FTP, HTTP, Harddrive. When I choose 'Harddrive', the next screen prompts for driver??? At this stage, I am stuck, and I will eject the DVD-ROM and Ctl-Atl-Del to reboot the PC to Windows XP. Sigh.......

According to some documentations, I should expect a selection of 'CD-ROM' when it prompts for my package installation. But I did not get it???

Strangely, I am able to boot and start up the setup from DVD drive.

Please can someone please enlighten me what happen during the setup. Thank you very much.

Seems like you should be getting the CD-ROM option when selecting the location of your package installation. I don't know the age of your computer, but one possibility is that the drivers included with your RH8 DVD do not support your computer's hardware. "I would recommend going with a more recent Linux distribution." RH8 came out mid 2002 and support for it ended in 12/31/2003. If you are bound and determined to use RH8, you could pick the FTP option and use ftp.redhat.com and directory /pub/redhat/linux/8.0/en/os/i386 to see if you can get any farther. There is of course no guarantee that this will work either.

How about trying Fedora because Redhat 9 and below are no longer supported products.

Thank you guys.

I have managed to resolve the issue by getting the CD-ROM version of RH Linux v9.

I am now able to get ahead with the Linux installation.

Thank you again.
