Trying to install Puppy on an Old PII
 

Pretty much a newbie.. I have ran a few other Distros on other computers . I have installed FreeSpire, Linspire and Ubuntu. I liked the way these all installed.. But not for older system...
I am trying to install Puppy Linux 2.12 on to an older PII 233 with 64 meg. Ram and a 32 meg video card. I have read up and think that Puppy is one of the ones that might work well on this older computer.. So I downloaded Puppy 2.12 ISO and I burned a Cd with Active@ ISO burner 1.1.. THis has worked fine many other times.. So I put in the CD into the Rom and try booting up the System.. I do not have any OS on this HD I wipped it clean, not even any SYS files.. I made sure in the BIOS that I made first boot the CD rom.. Well I get a Searching for a boot record on CDRom... Flashing for a few seconds then it goes down the list Floppy and IDE.0 OK Missing OS..
Any suggestions?? I am about to put an other CD rom in the machine and see if that changes any thing..

Check CD
 

Check the cd-rom and see how it got burned. You can burn the .iso file to the cd but what you want to do is burn the .iso image. To check this you only need to insert the cd into a working computer to ensure that there is more than one file on the cd.

If there is only one file on the cd then you will need to burn the image to another.

Found my problem..

Thanks for your time. I found that my Cd Rom was dirty and may be going bad.. It is old.. I have puppy up and running and I am now running the installer. It is ptetty impressive for its size..

Puppy is a sweet system, works great on old hardware. If ya get a few extra bucks you oughta buy some sticks of RAM. If you have about 256MB or more she will run entirely from RAM which makes it extremely fast.

I have ran into a few problems. I am thinking some of which is the bad drive.. But I did an install the the C: Drive from the wizard. then it ask me to install grub. So I did that and when I went to reboot it just hung up.. I am going to wipe the drive and start over after trying an other CD rom..

Problems with IBM 600E & Puppy

I've been on the Linux list for a long time but mostly lurk. I have the above laptop (Quite a machine for it's age!) and am having problems trying to load any Linux distros. I can force Puppy to run off the cd & memory but can not get it to load to the hard drive!. I had to wipe the HD as it was buggy. I used Disk Manager & created two 5 Gig partitions. made one the primary & put Dos 4.01 on it. the problem with puppy was It diden't "see"
any HD. Now that I've created the partitions, put dos on it. It sees the HD & partitions when the loading program gets to that point. shortly after, when it's ready to actually do the load, (the floppy is done, with no problems) The loading program again states no HD & exits the load, ending the whole cycle. I have a second IBM 600E running 2000 without a hitch, if I need something from it. I really want linux & EMC on this one, anybody with any suggestions????
