replace distro on dual boot system

I have a dual boot system Windows/puppy tah.
What I want to do is relplace puppy tah with slacko 6 3 0.
Windows is on C DRIVE
Puppy tah is on sda5 partition on mine.
How do I go about it to replace tah with slacko on sda5
Dont't forget this is dual boot I choose either windows or tah.
Thank you

During your fresh installation of slacko 6 3 0 just use the partition manager to delete the partition on sda5 and create a new partition. Than tell the installer to install slacko to the new partition that you created.

Is puppy tahr installed in frugal or full and do you wish to install slacko the same way?

Which version of windows do you have, might be significant with UEFI/GPT.
When you boot you can easily ascertain which partition windows is on so you do not install over it, run fdisk -l to get partition.
No need to delete the Puppy Tahr partition, simply select it as the partition on which you wish to install Slacko and be sure to select to format that partition before installing.

Yes I have frugal install and want slacko same.
Windows is XP, and because of dual boot, adjusting BIOS to boot from CD rom does not run the disc which slacko is on.
This is the part that is getting me beat. How do I get cd to run. So where do I go now surely its not a hard to change a distro.
Thank you

boot into puppy tahr, create a slacko directory on sda5,
copy the vmlinuz initrd and sfs files from the slacko cd to the slacko directory on sda5.
edit your menu.lst to add a entry for slacko. you can use the menuentry for tahr as a reference.

edit: The slacko files can also be copied over from the slacko iso.

Thank you CP21589.
Through your help I have got so far with the dual boot config.
I now have all slacko image file on sda5 in the my docs. folder from cd.
How now do I get to the menu.lst file to add the slacko info.?
One more point, will this config. allow slacko/puppytahr/and Windows XP to be selected in the Grub4 DOS config. Turning it into a three boot system. Which would be ok.
Thank you again.

the menu.lst will be in /boot/grub/ or NST directory on either your xp or puppy partition depending on how grub4dos was installed.

To keeps things simple the slacko files need to be in there own folder on sda5, therefore the suggestion to create directory on sda5 named slacko to put the cd files at the top of sda5, not put the slacko directory in a subfolder
puppy mounts it root partition(sda5) at /mnt/home

@pianoforte361:-

It's very easy to run two (or more) Puppies from a single partition.

If that was me, I would do the following...

1 ) In sda5, I would create a new directory (folder). I would name this Slacko_630.

2 ) The beauty of Pup (and Linux in general) is that you don't have to burn the ISO to a CD to run it; you can mount the ISO file itself, so as to 'look inside' it, and access the files within. From a running Tahrpup, I would click on the Slacko ISO file to mount it. A ROX-filer window will pop up, showing the contents of the ISO image. Leave this window open.

3 ) Open a second ROX-filer window on the new Slacko 630 directory you've just created. Highlight the contents of the first window, above; left-click & hold, and drag these across to the Slacko 630 window, and drop them there. In the little window that pops up, select 'Copy' (not 'Move; you can copy a read-only file-system, but you can't move it, since it is 'locked' in that location.)

4 ) Go to Menu->System->Grub4DOS bootloader config (not legacy GRUB; you don't want this). Re-run through the Grub4DOS install procedure; you may wish to re-name things at the 'discovered' systems stage, before 'OK'-ing. Believe me, it really is quicker to do this than it is to manually add the second entry to 'menu.lst'. Puppy's been built to make life as easy as possible; you might as well take advantage of this.

~~~~~~~******~~~~~~~~
That's all there is to it! Contrary to popular belief, this will work; Grub4DOS will find the system files, kernel, etc, of Slacko 630, because Puppy's version of Grub4DOS has been specially 'tweaked' to search TWO layers 'deep'.....it will search inside directories within a partition, y'see.
----------------------------------------------------------
If you now re-boot, all things being equal, you'll find 'Slacko 630' has been added to the boot menu, and will be able to choose from 'Tahrpup', 'Slacko 630', or 'Windows' to boot into. Since sda5 will have the boot flag set (on sda's MBR), this also applies to the Slacko sub-directory, since this is inside that partition.
I'm assuming XP is on sda1, yes? If you have a look inside sda1 while in Tahr, you should see Grub4DOS's 'gldr', 'menu.lst' and 'menu-advanced.lst' files in there.
Trust me, it's a hell of a lot easier to install a second Puppy into any kind of multi-boot setup once you already have a 'running' Puppy to work from... the more so, since Pup has all the necessary tools built-in.
The big advantage of all this is that to remove that particular Puppy (if you find you don't like it), all that is necessary is to delete the directory. Simples!
Puppy's my regular 'daily driver', and has been for a few years now. No need of anything else!
Hope that helps.
Mike.
Hi there Mike W.
I have tried all you told me and -----yes fail.
Recap.
Made the 630 folder and dragged in the slacko /files vmlinuz/initrd and the two sfs slacko files.
First obstacle that appears when grub4dos is launched is this
NEXT PUPPY DIRECTORIES HAVE SAME NAME ON MULTIPLE PARTITIONS.
CHANGE NAMES AND RESTART AGAIN. which directories do I change and to what.?
THESE ARE: sda1.tahr 6.0 frugal
sda5/tahr 6.0 frugal.
If Icontinue further with the grub4dos, I get searching for puppy files if I select, it boots up puppy tahr, no sign of slacko at this time.
Where do I go from here Mike.
Thank you thats all for now.
If this is the same computer, I refer you to posts 40 and 41 of this previous thread of yours https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...py-4175560906/
If you created a directory named slacko at the top of D drive(not in a subdirectory of D) copied the vmlinuz ,initrd and sfs files from the iso to the slacko directory and rename the vmlinuz, initrd and sfs to small letters if they are capitalized.
I'm confused. I don't understand how come you've got Tahrpup showing on sda1 as a frugal.....unless you've been doing more with this machine than you've told us about.
You haven't installed Tahr into the Windows partition as a frugal in a self-contained directory, have you.....using one of the puppy.exe installers by noryb009?
Full information is going to be necessary if we're to help you figure this one out. The 'frugal-in-a-directory' install I detailed within sda5 will definitely work; I've used this same procedure on several occasions myself, so I'm speaking from personal experience here....
I was unaware if these installers for puppy. I quess it is because I usually install puppy manually.
Then rename the tahr6.0frugal. directory that isn't in /mnt/home when booted into puppy, to something else before running grub4dos like maybe tahr6.0frugalno2 or just tahr6.0
