puppy does not boot due to corrupt etc/rc.d/rc.local0
 

Hello, I am a complete newbie in (Puppy 4.0) Linux, migrating from M$ Windows.

I installed Puppy on my HDD without any problems, even after subsequent reboots.

However, after having configured my WLAN USB adapter and my souncard with the default Puppy installers, my Puppy went dead on reboot.
I get a # prompt right after a messages of loading etc/rc.d/rc.local personal settings.

Booting from CD with pfix=purge did not solve my problem.

I mounted my puppy partition and had a look at etc/rc.d/rc.local
Nothing special there, just comments.

However, I recalled that both the WLAN and the soundcard installers reported having made changes to etc/rc.d/rc.local0 (note the zero)

Can I simply get the the rc.local0 from the CD to replace my corrupt rc.local0 on the HDD, or is there more to this?

PS: I suspect the reason why I ran into this problem is probably because I left the WinXP driver on the Windows NTFS partition instead of making a copy on the Linux partition.

I am no help I'm afraid - hopefully someone will be able to answer your specific question. (I'd be inclined to backup my rc.local0 and then start commenting out the bits to do with the wireless/soundcard and trying each in turn, rather than copy a new rc.local0)

A couple of questions, though - have you done a full or frugal installation? What happens if you enter "startx" at the prompt at which you stop?

I have been using puppy linux for a couple of days now. I performed a full hd-installation and was able to boot without any problems for the last days.

But as of today, somewhere in the process of booting, it stops and this line pops up:


Executing personal config script /etc/rc.d/rc.local….

#

Apparently I am supposed to enter something but WHAT?! And where those this come from all of sudden anyway?

@honeysuckle: your advice was of great help! At the first attempt with startx is was taken through some kind of troubleshooting menu, I clicked “ignore”. At the second attempt I entered startx again and Puppy booted. Now, when I boot the line above doesn’t pop up anymore… No idea what that has done, but thanks a ton mate!
