I've installed & running PL 421 with SeaMonkey 1.15.x but it has been unstable from the beginning (worst recently). Have read something about a Java or Flash problem that might be related to it but no final solution.
I decided first to download the SM 1.15.18 version but haven't installed it yet (I'm not sure how to proceed). Since doing the above has demonstrated to be more hard than easy I downloaded the PL 430 release (hoping that the problem is corrected there).
I've read that when creating a dual boot syst. like the one I'm using (Lin'N'WinNewbieProject) you can add more than one choice to the menu.lst file in order to boot any of the choices you made available. This is pricisely what I want to do but from the referred project's site there's no link to this version of Puppy so I copied the entries in the menu.lst file for pup421 & made the appropriate changes to reflect pup430 but when booting the process is stopped with a message saying that "pup-430.sfs isn't found". I verified & made any typing adjustments to reflect what I guessed was expected from the api but it didn't work.
Something that attracted my attention was that within the Puppy 421 folder there's a file: pup_saved-first_time.2fs & within the Puppy 430 folder it is not. I might have passed over it when extracted the contents of the downloaded .iso file (could it be?). I don't know the purpose of this file but I want to know if any of you have the correct process to change the Puppy version within the kind of installation I'm using.

to boot puppy you need vmlinuz, initrd.gz, and pup-430.sfs and possibly zp430305.sfs for drivers.
the pup_sav.2fs file is where your settings are saved at. puppy should be able to detect your sav.2fs file and ask to convert to the newer version, however it don't always work.

the path and filename of pup-430.sfs MUST BE IN LOWCASE. this includes the "pupdir=" definition in menu.lst.

correct:
/puppy/pup-430.sfs

error:
/PUPPY/pup-430.sfs
/puppy/PUP-430.SFS


i found this out because i boot puppy in frugal mode from DOS using linld.com.

Thanks for the advice tikbalang. I found out that the folder containing the Puppy files was named as Puppy430 & after changing it to puppy430 it booted up. Sometimes what it takes for something to go wrong is a simplicity easy to be overlooked!
My problem now is that after tweaking it for >1 hr I couldn't make it to recognize my dsl nor the dial-up internal modem (this last thing happenned with 421, too). This is an old notebook with just 128 MB of RAM, no diskette driver nor cd-burning capability. I've three usb ports & need 1 at all times for my keybboard & mouse. At least, I've managed to put DamnSmallLinux into a 64 MB MuVo Mp3 Player that boots & works fine.
I'll be working these issues around during the weekend & plan to post any problem/solution encountered here...

The problem now is to get it to recognize my dial-up-modem &/or the dsl-modem to connect to the internet. I've noticed that it behaves different from the 4.2.1 ver that I'm using now. I also have the capability to connect via wireless but that never has worked (even from Windows).
I read something like 'wrapping' a windows driver to make use of it from linux but this is completely new for me: any hint?

what is the make and model numbers of your devices. most internel modems are winmodems and not supported very good in linux.

My notebook is an old Earthwalk eBuddy, Have read the whole user manual fetching for some info around this but the only thing that I can tell you is that it's an internal modem (probably part of the motherboard. I ran an application that comes with PL under <Menu> <System> HardInfo that shows the following:

I launched another application (<Menu> <System> PupScan) & the result follows:

This is all that I can give (without opening the thing). Certainly, there's a 'kind' of recognition of the artifact by PL but it lacks (apparently) info/drivers for putting it into service.

As I mention above I recently downloaded the 430 version of PL but I can't connect to the internet. I was chatting with someone & learned that there is a more recent version from the place I downloaded the original one (haven't gone there yet):431. I have been reading about linux and PL to see if there's a method to tell PL to upgrade to a newer version because the method I used for going from 412 to 421 duplicates the amount of hd to be used (I used the same method for going to 430 hoping it was going to work in order to eliminate the 412 folder).
I know that someone told me about installing a newer version of SeaMonkey by downloading, extracting to the same folder where SM is (after deleting everything - I guess) which is the main driving motor for me to seek a more stable browser. The PL 430 & 431, both have SM ver 1.1.18, that would do.
If needed, I've prepared a screenshot of how my hd's root looks like (will send upon request).

try running connect again after entering the following modprobe commands in terminal: modprobe snd-via82xx-modem ; modprobe snd-pcm-oss ; modprobe snd-mixer-oss ; modprobe snd-seq-oss

Thanks colorpurple21859. I've been having a problem with using the rxvt and more specifically with the commands.
I can open the terminal window but, apart from obtaining some info after 'dirs -l' or 'help dirs, help, etc' I cannot accomplish much more. Many times I've tried to change the directory (following some directions from sites like this) but can't do it.
It's a bit funny but, I was reading a manual for puppy online, that instructs to cd for performing an action. The manual is suppossed to be intended (in part) for people that wish to change to linux, or test it. At the beginning it points to this command but, if as in my case, the person cannot perform the first task will be very disappointed. Curiuosly, the instructions for doing the same task under windows is more complete &, from my experience, much less troublesome (it works as it's exposed in the manual).
I wish some info concerning the following: rxvt, sudo & su. To be as honest as I can be I must say that I'm very confused upon this.

cd is the command to change the current directory your in. google linux commands or any command you want to know about, there is a wealth of information out there about linux.
