Puppy 2.12 Final Released
Barry has announced 212 final. Announcement at Distrowatch:
http://distrowatch.com/3855 Note that Barry has declared this to a stable release, that is, one that will be the long-term basis for further development of Puppy software and capabilities. The best mirror (going by my own experience) seems to be the one at http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr/puppylinux/ You have a choice - the one with "zdrv" in the name includes the extra squashfile full of drivers. Enjoy, and keep the bug reports and bug fixes coming! Cheers, Mark  |
And of course there's my announcement on the Developer News Blog:

Hi, I have several questions.
First, for some reason Puppy 2.12 does not boot up from the CD. I did not have such a problem with 2.11. Maybe I am doing something wrong? After downloading an image on my Mac, I use the "Toast Titanium" app to burn an "ISO 9660" bootable disk. For some reason, when I try to boot a PC from this disk it boots Windows. Any advices? Second question is to Barry. I am curious why Seamonkey is used as a default web browser? I do not object it, and it is not a big deal for me to download a copy of Firefox. I just wanted to know the factors affected this browser selection. Third, is there a way to set Puppy to double-click to launch programs and open files? I still cannot get used that it opens everything with one click, and very often I open two copies of the same piece of software. Besides these little things that are pretty much subjective and non-essential, I love Puppy very much. I believe it is very simple to use and does everything 96% of users need. It is very pity that not too many PC users know about it. I showed it to our sysadmin at LSU, and he was amazed that one can carry his or her entire computer on a USB-key chain. I guess, every one would greatly benefit from a book about Puppy. Probably a PDF format book/manual would be the fastest and easiest way to do it. Val |
if 211 booted, but the 212 cd is ignored and it just boots Windows, it sounds like a bad cd ... it sounds like either the iso did not download properly (did you check the md5sum?) or the cd did not burn properly (will the cd boot on another machine?)
i hate double clicking ... the first thing i do after installing Windows is to set it to single click mode the Puppy desktop is generated by Rox filer ... you can right click a desktop icon, click Rox Options, and uncheck Single Click To Open in the Pinboard tab |

I have finally burned 2.12 bootable CD. Now it works fine. Still have a little problem: on the laptop resolution 1024 x 780 is too low and 1200 x 800 is too high. In the first case everything is not that sharp as I would like, and in the second case everything is perfect except the fact that the launch panel is out of screen. I guess it is because sometimes laptops have unusual proportions of the screens. But I can live with this. |
