New to Puppy, probem with WiFi
 

Hi folks, I'm new here and new to Linux. I have a similar situation with an old computer. I've been running Puppy Linux on an old slow PC and was surprised at the improved performance. The computer was being used for kids. They want to play games online, but under XP it was simply to slow. When running Puppy however the games seem to work fine.

Yesterday I installed Puppy on a USB Flash drive which I'm using on my new Dell Inspiron Newbook. The program boots and runs just fine but I simply can't connect to my wireless network. I have a Dlink wireless router and have no problem accessing it via XP home from the netbook. Puppy however is giving me a hard time.

There are several odd things which have me wondering if I'm missing drivers for my WiFi hardware.

When I go through the set up routine Puppy sees my etho and broadband Wifi hardware. When I run the Wireless wizard it also seems to see my wireless router, although I'm still not certain of that. However, I am aware that aside from my own wireless router there are at least 6 others in my local area, all if which are locked except for one. When I run the connection module in Puppy none of these other routers appear in the list.

This makes me curious if I have the correct wireless drivers installed. I have been through the list of available drivers that come with this version of Puppy. To be honest I have no idea which one might be required for my netbooks WiFi hardware.

I'd be grateful for any assistance you can offer in sorting out the problem. Thanks in advance

In the Wizard you should see eth0 And wlan0, or something to that effect if you have both ethernet and wireless. by selecting wlan0 or eth0 or whatever shows up, you should select wireless and then "Scan" for networks..
Are Both connections [assuming you have 2] shown?

Hi again and thanks very much for your reply. I have actually gone through the procedure you suggested before posting my question. Unfortunately this didn't seem to solve the problem. I'm going to go back and review what I did just to be sure I did it correctly.

Interestingly after attempting to set up the WiFi adapter in Puppy I discovered that my WiFi connection through XP no longer worked. This connection was made through XP with is currently the primary OS on this computer.

This has made me wonder if Puppy is using native windows WiFi drivers. If that theory is true, when I screwed up the settings in Puppy it may have also screwed up the settings for windows as well.

Fortunately my grandson has a separate wireless router on his computer in my basement and I've been able to connect using that one. This one is an open connection so I was able to log on without first entering any security info.

While fiddling around with the system yesterday I discovered the following info. My WiFi adapter is Broadcom / Chip set BCM 4315 / Driver 4,170.773

I plan to remove the WiFi account I set up in Puppy for my primary router. If I am once again able to connect normally then I'll know that it was the account settings which screwed things up. I will then try to set it up again carefully following the procedure you provided.

Pay particular attention to tempestous's post on broadcom devices in the link below. You can also use ndiswrapper and windows drivers which is quite easy to do in Puppy.

Hi fair is fair and thanks very much for your reply. The post you pointed me to explains the issue perfectly and offers a solution I think will work. I'll check it out and let you know. If all else fails I'll fall back on ndiswrapper.
