Need help, step-by-step, to install Linux with Realtek wireless, please!
 

Hi.

I've been a Linux user at work for 10 years, so I know how to navigate, create, delete files, etc.

I've tried several times to install Linux on my home computer. Installation usually goes well, but I've never gotten it to recognize my wireless.

I've tried Ubuntu, Knoppix, openSUSE, and probably others, but I really like the look, feel, and speed of Puppy.

I'm currently trying Puppy 5.2, just upgraded from 5.01.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ62 laptop, 2.2GHZ 3GB RAM. My Linux partition is 8GB formatted ext2. The WiFi adapter is a Realtek RTL8191SE 802.11 b/g/n.

Puppy recognizes my Realtek wired card upon booting but not the WiFi.

I've installed packages till I'm blue in the face, chasing down dependencies and "File not found" errors and build not found errors. I think I've gotten it all messed up, again. I want to do a fresh install, but this time, I want your help! Take me by the hand and lead me step-by-step through the installation and WiFi setup.

For starters, is my setup good, and if so, should I do a Frugal install or a Full install?

Another post recommending searching Google for rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0015.0127.2010.tar.gz

That search produces many links. I don't know how any of them would apply to Puppy.

Thank you, stress_junkie. I'll try that when I get home tonight. Looks promising.

I do want to do a fresh install, though, so what do you think: frugal or full?

Ok.

So I downloaded the driver gz file. Turns out that it's the same file I've already tried.

Either way, I followed the directions I found, after a fresh install (frugal since you guys don't have a preference). One thing was that the directions said to install linux_headers_generic. I looked that up in the puppy directions and found that headers are installed by putting the file lupu_devx_520.sfs in the same directory as your save file. No problem.

Then I updated package manager and installed build_essential and make_3.81

After decompressing the driver gz file, I did a "make" in that directory. The result is "/lib/modules/2.6.33.2/build: No such file or directory. Stop."

I've looked this up and haven't found any techniques to cure it.

Anybody know what's going on?

By the way, is there something wrong with me asking for step-by-step directions to installing Puppy and getting WiFi working? I've read a hundred sources and tried a hundred times before without success. I just thought you guys might be able to get me started on the right foot so I don't screw the installation up right off the bat.

Do you just prefer it for me to just do my thing and then let you know what error messages I get? I don't mind that. Either way is fine.

Have you tried the r8192se_pci-k2.6.33.2 pet package located under setup in the package manager?

First off, all of you guys: I felt like I copped a pretty big attitude last night as I was typing those last two posts. I'm sorry for that. I was just frustrated after another failed attempt with Linux. You guys have helped me in the past, and I can't thank you enough for your patience with newbies like me who know (almost) nothing.

Secondly, colorpurple, you're my hero of the day! I couldn't find the pet package in the package manager, so I googled it and downloaded it. It installed easily. After a reboot, my wireless card came right up! I'm now connected to WiFi! Thank you! It was so easy. I'm going to do a fresh install to undo any garbage I did last night, and then I'll install that package. Lovin' it! Thank you again!
