Modifying MBR in universal installer

I just used the universal installer to put puppy linux on a usb stick(very nice), but I had a problem during the install. part of the installation asks about changing the MBR, but it steers you to accept the default option, which is "do nothing". It says that the MBR on most devices is already fine without modifying it, which seems wrong to me.

I thought bootloaders had to modify the MBR to work and how many flash drives have you ever bought that came setup to work with syslinux? so I picked the default option first and had to go back and run the install again when it didn't work(this time i picked the syslinux mbr.bin).

Am I wrong here? has anybody been able to do this without modifying the mbr?

I do not know if this would help you, but you can make a bootable USB stick without ever burning a Puppy CD and do it from windows.
The instructions are here..
I hope that will help.
Also, using syslinux mbr.bin should work. If not, try the link method.

yeah, my point was really just that I think their instructions are way off.

and I was wondering if anybody agreed with me

I used Puppy's universal installer to create a USB flash drive that booted just fine. And it was a frugal install too.
So it can be done.
It has been a while though.
puppylinux.org should have more instructions than just the link I pointed out to you.
